Elena Gallegos Open Space 

The Elena Gallegos Open Space has seven covered picnic areas and two reservable areas with barbecue grills. From the space, you get stunning views of Mount Taylor to the west, the Jemez Mountains to the north, and the Tijeras Arroyo to the south. It's open until 7 pm in the winter and 9 pm in the summer. There are a number of trails around the space that can be used by hikers, bikers, and equestrians. There's also the Cottonwood Springs trail, which is accessible to everyone and features rest stops with art by Margie O'Brien. 

Overall, the Elena Gallegos Open Space is a beautiful picnic place with gorgeous views and the opportunity to view a variety of flora and fauna. Plus, it's only a short drive from the city center. 

ABQ BioPark 

The ABQ BioPark consists of a zoo, a botanical garden, an aquarium, and an artificial beach. The botanical garden and Tingley Beach are both great picnic places but keep in mind that grilling is restricted during fire season. The botanical garden, zoo, and aquarium are open until 5 pm daily, while Tingley Beach is open until sunset. 

The ABQ BioPark is a great place to take people of all ages as there are a variety of activities people can participate in before settling down for a picnic. The zoo features 900 animals from around the world, while the botanical garden has 32 acres of exhibits. There's also a BUGarium featuring an extensive collection of insects from around the country. Plus, you can also go fishing at Tingley Beach and walk the mile-long trail around the fishing ponds. There's definitely something here for everyone. 

Pat Hurley Park 

Pat Hurley Park is a great place for a picnic, and it offers gorgeous panoramic views of the city. The lower loop of the park includes the community center and playground, while the upper loop has grassy playfields and a small playground. 

There are many grassy spots here where you can spread a blanket and have a picnic. Plus, the nearby Sawmill Market offers a variety of food vendors where you can pick up items for your picnic. Afterward, if you feel the need to burn off some calories, you can take a one-mile walk around the park on a paved trail. 

Roosevelt Park

The Gutierrez-Hubbell House is a 5,700-square-foot adobe structure that was originally a ranch. Today, it consists of a traditional garden, a heritage garden, farm plots, and a walking track around the house. Dating back to the 1860s, it is a historic landmark. 

You can take a tour of the adobe house and then relax in one of the many designated picnic spots on the property. There are also a number of events here with food, music, and house tours. If you're a history buff, you can learn about the history of the house, which used to be a trading post, and how it has been rehabilitated. There's also a fall farm festival with local vendors, fresh food, and farm animal viewing. 

Pueblo Montano Picnic Area and Trailhead 

The Pueblo Montano Picnic Area and Trailhead is a part of the Rio Grande Valley State Park. It offers three picnic tables and a number of shady spots where you could simply spread a blanket and have a picnic. You'll enjoy scenic views of the Rio Grande and the surrounding mountains from this section of the Rio Grande Valley State Park. 

There is a 1.7-mile loop in the area for those who want to do some hiking; it's also great for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Plus, you can also explore the rest of the park, including the Rio Grande Nature Center, Los Poblanos Fields Open Space, and the Petroglyph National Monument.
